Lady Gaga's Favorite Bar On The LES
Go back in time at Economy Candy, a good old fashioned candy store on the Lower East Side that is stacked from floor to ceiling with sugary goodness. Give in to your sweet tooth by checking out classics like licorice or penny candies, or browse some of their limited-edition or imported products. There's a selection of chocolate and dried fruit available by the pound behind the counter, and they even have some non-edible nostalgic items like vintage trading cards and toys. See who can find the most unusual product to try or share a bag of your childhood favorites. And be sure to check out the wall of Jelly Belly flavors at the back of the store.
Once you have your haul, walk over to Welcome to the Johnson's, a bar made to look like someone's 70s basement, complete with weird family photos and sticky plastic-covered couches. Order a $2 can of PBR, retrieved right out of a fridge behind the bar, or play a game of pool on the table in the back. This bar is the epitome of a dive with a graffiti-covered bathroom and dim lighting, but its lack of pretension helps create a low key vibe, great for some quality time together and people watching. Probably the coolest thing about it? It's known to be Lady Gaga’s favorite.
