This Mexican Restaurant In Astoria Has Avocado Ice Cream

Hot Tamale! While Hoja Santa is named after the Mexican pepper leaf sometimes used to make the beloved tamale, Astoria’s newest Mexican restaurant delivers so much more than your average fare. Owned by 22-year old (#GIRLBOSS) Carolina Parroquin and her family, the goal was to elevate familiar Mexican flavors and serve up dishes in a cozy, yet sophisticated environment. Consider that goal crushed because this place is a must-eat. To quench your thirst, try one of the many different flavors of Agua Fresca before dipping into a bowl of fresh guac. Try it with crab or tuna if you want to switch it up. Need a sweet treat post-meal? Treat yourself to the avocado ice cream for dessert.

When you’re finished, head on over to Albatross. Astoria’s most notorious and oldest gay bar is upbeat, welcoming and an all-around good time. If you’re an early bird, you might catch the tail end of Happy Hour (every Monday through Saturday, from 5-8 p.m.). All cocktails are served in 16 oz. glasses, so you (probably?) only need one. But if you end up staying late night (and trust us, you will), grab another drink and participate in one of their awesome, weekly events. Tuesday Bingo and Live Drag Saturday's are a really great time here. But singing karaoke on a Monday sounds like a strong choice.
