Jim Caruso's Cast Party at The Birdland Is Your Next Monday Night Out

In the chaotic sea of people in Times Square, it's welcomed—even cherished—to have a go-to place of relief. While there are lots of tiny, busy pizza spots in Midtown to grab a slice, John's of Times Square allows you to not only to have a pie but to eat it too. The dining room is two stories and features a stained glass domed ceiling and giant mural of Manhattan on the wall, spacious enough so that your table is not squished right up against your neighbor's. Pizzas are made to order in a coal fire brick oven and come in varieties like margherita with fresh mozzarella and basil and blanca with ricotta and mozzarella and no tomato sauce. If you're not feeling pizza, they also have a selection of pastas, salads, and sandwiches.

Then take a walk to your next oasis at The Birdland, a legendary jazz club, to attend Cast Party, a weekly open mic night on Mondays at 9:30 p.m. Hosted by the charismatic Jim Caruso, a legendary showman, anything can happen onstage during this weekly happening. It's a zany and fun show that is different every night; Broadway performers and famous musicians can stop by for a song or two, fresh-faced showbiz hopefuls might make their New York debut, and sometimes there's the occasional head-scratcher of an act that will make an interesting memory. You can even hop up for your 15 seconds of fame if you bring some sheet music and sign up once they start taking names around 9:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
