Authentic Turkish Cuisine And Free Billiards in Astoria
Lokanta, meaning restaurant in Turkish, serves—you guessed it—homemade Turkish style cuisine with old-school hospitality. The dining room at Lokanta is simple, with bentwood café chairs and marble-top tables that go along with the green-and-white botanical-themed wallpaper, and black-and-white checkered floors. It's hard not to stuff yourselves entirely, but we highly recommend being strategic and saving some room for dessert, because the baklava is imported from the world-pistachio hotbed of Antep, Turkey. Or go with Chef Orhan's baked rice pudding—it's fast becoming a cult favorite. Add BYOB (with no corkage) to a buzzy vibe, and you have yourself one hot night out.
There are lots of pool halls around, but not too many let you play for free (with the purchase of a drink) like they do at Break Bar and Billiards. This offer, as part of their popular happy-hour deal (also applicable to Ping-Pong), is one of the biggest draws at Break, a vibey Astoria hangout. And its Queens location means Break is roomy compared with some of its Manhattan counterparts. The bar serves up a hefty selection of 18 beers on tap and a classic selection of 12 or more bottled beers, plus all the fun and games you could want: billiards, ping pong, darts, foosball, air hockey, and vintage arcade games. In terms of decor, it's exactly what you'd expect—wooden floors, low hanging lights, and sports memorabilia hanging on the walls. Warning: there's a high likelihood you'll make friends.
