Our Top 10 Favorite On-Screen Couples Of All Time

We all know that television and movies don’t always reflect reality, especially when it comes to relationships! That being said, there are some couples that we here at idk tonight respect and stan for being absolutely perfect for each other (and only slightly romanticized!) Here are ten of our favorite on screen couples that are total #relationshipgoals.

01

Phoebe and Mike from Friends

01

Starting off with a controversial opinion, but Ross and Rachel are over as the golden couple of Friends. Their on again, off again romance may have captivated us a decade ago, but further study reveals that Phoebe and Mike are the best couple on the show (and Ross kind of sucks—remember when he dates a student?!) Mike fully embraces Phoebe’s uniqueness and the two are always happy together. They also bring out the best in each other, like when they decided to make a donation to charity instead of having a wedding (and then changed their minds….so they’re also relatable!)

02

Garnet (AKA Ruby and Sapphire) from Steven Universe

Garnet (AKA Ruby and Sapphire) from Steven Universe

The adorable cartoon Steven Universe has swept the nation because of it’s charming writing, appeal to both kids and adults, and positive representation of LGBTQ+ characters. A beautiful example of this is Garnet, the space-gem being that’s actually a fusion of two smaller space gems, Ruby and Sapphire. Imagine being so in love and so in sync that you and your partner decide to merge together and exist as a whole new being? Swoon. But also, alone time would be hard to come by.

03

Vivian and Edward from Pretty Woman

Vivian and Edward from Pretty Woman

Unconventional at its time but now a classic, Pretty Woman is an iconic romcom with an iconic couple. As a down on her luck sex worker and a ritzy business man, Vivian and Edward couldn’t be more opposite. But through the time they spend together they learn about each other’s world and open their minds to accepting people beyond societal labels. Not to mention, their chemistry is pretty dang STRONG.

04

Baby and Johnny in Dirty Dancing

04

Is there anything anyone wants more that to be lifted the way Baby is lifted in the final dance sequence of this movie? Baby and Johnny are another great example of opposites, from different classes, who find a common passion in dancing - and in each other. They also stick up for each other and their love - after all, nobody puts Baby in a corner on Johnny’s watch.

05

Rose and Jack in Titantic

Rose and Jack in Titantic

Did you think you could have a list on on screen couples without including these two? You’re as foolish and optimistic as Rose and Jack’s beautiful, impractical love. They have an instant connection that’s incredibly rare and live in the moment together without worries - for as long as possible. Even when trouble kicks in, they’re love stays strong, strong enough for Jack to make the ultimate sacrifice. (Even though there was TOTALLY enough room for both of them on that piece of wood).

06

Carrie and Aiden from Sex and the City

Carrie and Aiden from Sex and the City

Another hot take and possibly controversial opinion! But! Big isn’t always the best to Carrie, and while he does learn, her previous boyfriend Aiden starts and finishes as one of the sweetest men in television history. Their relationship is so easy and uncomplicated that it actually confuses Carrie (homegirl loves to date toxic men!) and he has an adorable dog. Perfect couple, though apparently not meant to be. And no, we’re not gonna talk about what happened in Sex and the City 2 because no one should ever talk about that movie.

07

Michael Scott and Holly Flax from The Office

07

Blah blah Jim blah blah Pam, whatever! The real dream couple from the beloved comedy show The Office is Michael and Holly. Michael is a difficult person, even though he has a kind heart, and the right person for him almost seemed impossible until Holly came along. Just as weird and incredibly kind, together the two were super sweet and yes, super weird together. Don’t we all just want someone we can be out weirdest self with?

08

Harry and Sally from When Harry Met Sally

Harry and Sally from When Harry Met Sally

This couple is from a classic romcom for a reason! People often say the best romantic relationships come from friendships, and this movie is a huge piece of supportive evidence for the theory. Because of their friendship, Harry and Sally are able to build a hilarious report and incredible trust and support for each other without the complicated feelings of early romance. Then when the romance enters, it’s not complicated at all.

09

Kumail and Emily in The Big Sick

Kumail and Emily in The Big Sick

The Big Sick made a big splash (see what I did there?) when it came out because not only is it hilarious, but based on an incredible true story. Kumail and Emily have the beginnings of a picture-perfect romance until she gets sick and ends up in a coma. Though Kumail shows a sweet amount of dedication, he falls more in love with the idea of her than the actually, not-in-a-coma her. We’ve all struggled with fixating on our idea of someone, but the happy ending of this movie shows that you can move past that and give the relationship a second chance (with everybody fully conscious, ideally).

10

Luke and Lorelei

10

Though Gilmore Girls chronicles Rory’s many complicated relationships, they real couple to watch in this series is Luke and Lorelei. Their slow burn from flirty friends into romantic partners, exes, and back into lovers is exhilarating to watch. Lorelei’s endless charm is enough to bring grumpy Luke out of his shell, and he cares deeply for her despite being far from a people person. They both get to stay who they are while making each other better, which is the best thing you can have in a relationship.

Though these couples go through a lot more fictionalized drama and a lot less real life drama (“where the HELL did you put the remote?), they still showcase positive aspects of relationships that we should all look for with our partners.
