5 Outdoor Workout Ideas To Do Together, Post-Turkey Overload

There's a strange time between Thanksgiving and New Year's where all of a sudden, we’ve eaten a lot, and we haven’t had a stable workout routine because we’re all over the map.

Consider taking the pressure off of signing up for an expensive boutique fitness studio together, and make your workouts a fun activity that gets you into nature (and away from screens), while also guaranteeing you’ll look great for the inevitable holiday photo-ops coming your way.

Below, we've rounded up five of the new and improved ways to utilize the city as your outdoor playground. Before winter’s chill hits, take advantage of the great outdoors during the final days of seasonable weather and sunlight, with some of the best NYC workout ideas that everyone (of varying fitness levels) can enjoy.

01

You Literally Can Be In Central Park At Any Time

01

Both a must-see for visitors and a mecca for charity races, Central Park is iconic. And it’s in your backyard. Why not see it in a new light with your partner on a sunny autumn afternoon?

You’ll be sure to come across lots of tourists and “candid” photo ops, with the occasional reprieve as you escape deeper into the park. If you opt for a romantic run at dawn, you might even be able to see some mesmerizing holiday decorations and gaze up at the stars together (if you’re lucky). Or if you live near the park, consider grabbing your mats and practicing a little sunrise yoga before your day gets going.

Host a Holiday Flag Football Game

Host a Holiday Flag Football Game

There’s no better way to gather friends and stay active than with a good ol’ game of flag football. Find an empty field, grab a football, and go! It’s that simple to get in a workout that’s fun, social and suitable for everyone, even if you’ve eaten way too many Thanksgiving leftovers. Make it scenic by choosing one of New York’s parks that are also on the water — like Brooklyn Bridge Park or Riverside Park.

03

Practice Your Figure 8 at Bryant Park

Lace up your skates and enjoy the holiday lights and action at Bryant Park (open 8AM-10PM daily, and free!). There’s no better way to say “I love you” than by holding hands as you pretend to you know what you’re doing together on the ice. The winter Olympics are coming up, so there’s no excuse not to practice, Michelle Kwan style. Plus, the holiday market is right next-door, so post-workout you can wander through the magical locale and get some shopping done.

04

Throw a Spiral in Prospect Park

04

Walking into Prospect Park is truly a breath of fresh air. Park Slope, known for its endless rows of cozy brownstones and family vibe, is a great place to workout. Spend your day wandering around the boutique shops for some pre-holiday shopping (no more last minute Prime orders) and finish it off by tossing around the football and doing some drills. Bring a YouTube workout on your phone to really make it count, like this one and this one.

05

Find Your Zen

Find Your Zen

Ok, so this one isn’t TECHNICALLY a workout, and it’s not outdoors. Nevertheless, MNDFL of Williamsburg will keep you calm this holiday season. With a meditation room decked out with plants and a floor-to-ceiling window looking out over a quaint outdoor green space, MNDFL has an aesthetic that will tame your monkey mind. Not to mention, they serve calming tea with each session and offer an array of comfy pillows to assist in your ascent to bliss.
