The Best NYC Coffee Shops to Hit Before Date Night

We usually consider coffee in terms of “I need to become a human, where the f%&k is my coffee?” But we think our old pal Joe has another very special use in the New York scheme of things — namely, before you go out on the town with your special lady or manfriend. Maybe you had a long day at work, maybe you’ve had a lazy Sunday — whatever the case, you could probably use a little jolt before whatever it is you have planned. Espresso before a movie? Needed. Latte in hand for a walk around a gallery opening? Of course. Below, our favorite coffee shops to start your date night off right.

01

The Flats BKSpeed Coffee

Williamsburg, open until 5 p.m.

01

This Williamsburg coffee shop has total “super loaded great-aunt” living room vibes with carpets and lamps, an art deco chandelier, Victorian-looking furniture, pink and gold tiled ceilings, two big mystery chests in the center of the room (WHAT is in there?), random GoT-vibe chainmail, and wood-paneled walls. It doesn’t get more eclectic than this place. Plus, the cold brew is strong, and so is their burrito game.

02

Voyager Espresso

Financial District, open until 5, closed on the weekends

Voyager Espresso

Looking to combine a love of sci-fi with your coffee fix? Look no further than Voyager Espresso. This place is straight out of the future with it’s all-metal decor. You’ll feel like you’re in some sort of bunker space ship escaping the apocalypse. Aka, a great way to start your date night.

03

Third Rail Coffee

Greenwich Village, open until 8 p.m.

Third Rail Coffee

Greenwich Village, open until 8 p.m.

Stop by this small, sunny, cash-only coffee shop in Greenwich Village before catching a movie at IFC Center. Because getting-a-coffee-before-a-movie-date is the most glorious thing to remember to do, especially at a theater like IFC where they only screen the thinking man’s movies. You won’t miss a thing, and conversation will be stellar on the way home.

04

Hi-Collar

East Village, open as late as 2 a.m.

04

Recently chosen as one of the top 25 cafes in America by Epicurious, Hi-Collar is a Japanese Jazz Age-themed heaven. Beyond that, Hi-Collar is cool because while they’re a cafe by day, by night they switch to a sake-shooting bar where “high collars are abandoned”, whatever that sexy thought means.

05

Cafe Grumpy

Lower East Side, open until 7 p.m.

Cafe Grumpy

Can you think of a happier way to kick off your night than by starting with a coffee at Cafe Grumpy? It’s impossible to be grumpy when you say the word grumpy. (Really, try it!) Plus, they only serve sustainable coffee here. Doesn’t it feel good to be good?

06

The Chipped Cup

Hamilton Heights, open until 8 p.m.

The Chipped Cup

Hamilton Heights, open until 8 p.m.

Three words: Backyard. Garden. Goals. Okay, more words than that. This old-timey space in Hamilton Heights is the perfect spot to start your night with coffee and romance. With it’s whimsical decor, you can easily imagine Chip from Beauty & The Beast being right at home here (if he didn’t become a kid again at the end, of course).

07

Happy Bones

Little Italy, open until 7 p.m.

07

Happy Bones is the whitewashed, minimalist space you need for a quick burst of energy and inspiration for the night ahead. And we love that they’ve chosen New York as their homebase because it’s “a city that rewards excellence.” Amen.

08

Coffee Project

East Village, open until 6 p.m.

Coffee Project

Ever had a deconstructed latte? Well here’s your chance. The beautiful three-piece glassware you’ll be served is reason enough to try this East Village gem before you begin bar hopping (or whatever else) nearby.

09

Dover Street Market’s Rose Bakery

Kips Bay, open until 7 p.m.

Dover Street Market’s Rose Bakery

Kips Bay, open until 7 p.m.

Located inside Dover Street Market (which is a must-see in itself with its high-end clothing and fashion displays), Rose’s bakery is a luxe af cafe. Grab a latte and wander.

10

Café Integral

Little Italy, open until 5 p.m.

10

If you’re looking for exceptional Nicaraguan beans locally sourced in NYC (because why not?), Café Integral is your shop. Definitely try the La Samaria, which has notes of strawberry, dark chocolate, and sweet spice. Sold.

11

Pietro Nolita

Nolita, open as late as 2 a.m.

Pietro Nolita

While you may look inside this pink, ‘50s-style eatery and think, this one’s for the girls, think twice, gents! The pesto pasta alone should sell you on eating here. And remember: la vie en rose is the best vie to live.

12

Sit & Wonder

Prospect Heights, open until 6/7 p.m.

Sit & Wonder

Prospect Heights, open until 6/7 p.m.

We repeat: Coffee shops with backyards are so soothing and relaxing, they’re exactly what NYC couples need. Do as they say: sit and wonder, side by side.

13

Caffe Reggio

Greenwich Village, open as late as 4 a.m.

13

We. Love. Caffe. Reggio. Moody, warm artwork on the walls probably worth millions, the first cappuccino machine in the US — what more is there to say? They’re open until 4 a.m., so it’s basically a safe coffee haven 24 hours a day. And you’re golden if you want to go out on Macdougal Street after — they have everything from comedy shows to intimate Italian joints.

14

Devoción

Williamsburg, open until 7 p.m.

Devoción

This is one of those “it’s almost so Instagrammable it’s annoying” spots in Williamsburg. But whatever. It’s very pretty, and the signature giant green plant wall will make you feel like you’re outside, even when you’re sipping inside.

15

Roots Café

South Slope, open until 5 p.m.

Roots Café

South Slope, open until 5 p.m.

Very chill, cash-only cafe with music and poetry nights. Again, this could be a one-stop shop for your night out too. Follow them on Insta @rootsbrooklyn to keep up to date with their schedule of events.

16

The Wooly Daily

Financial District, open until 6:30 p.m.

16

Sounds like a newspaper? Nope, just an especially cozy cafe in FiDi. You may come in for the coffee, but if you leave without splitting their new chocolate chip cookie, The Doppelchïpper, with both dark and milk chocolate chips, brown sugar and Maldon sea salt flakes, you’re missing out on pure bliss.

17

MUD Coffee

East Village, open until midnight

MUD Coffee

MUD is a neighborhood-y spot through and through. All locals, all the time. And though we’re still heartbroken that they took away their mobile truck on Astor, at least we still have the lovely homebase to get our cup of Mud.

18

Flora Coffee

Park Slope, open until 5 p.m.

Flora Coffee

Park Slope, open until 5 p.m.

Out of this world sticky buns + a classy environment (those coffee cups!) = a great mood booster to kick-off your date night.

19

Toby's Estate Coffee

West Village, open until 7 p.m.

19

Solid coffee in a light, airy space. The best part about Toby’s though, is that they have classes for the true coffee aficionados. From cold-brew methods to learning how to judge a coffee, aka “cupping.” Hint, it’s about more than “This had a drug-like effect on my nervous system, great!”
