Attaboy
134 Eldridge St (btwn Delancey & Broome St), New York, NY 10002
Hidden behind an unassuming storefront, Attaboy is open every day of the week from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. and operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is one of those spots where you just tell the bartender what you like, and voila, they'll concoct the drink of your dreams.
Thyme Bar
315 7th Ave, New York, NY 10001
Thyme Bar
Sexy and moody, the underground Thyme Bar offers the very best and creative mixology, with most of its drinks inspired by herbs and flowers. A former secret 1920s gambling hall and speakeasy, the ambiance is inherently sexy, the curated food menu is delicious, and the cocktails are out of this world. They even offer cocktail classes and experiences where you can go behind the bar yourself.
Employees Only
510 Hudson St (at Christopher St), New York, NY 10014
Employees Only
510 Hudson St (at Christopher St), New York, NY 10014
Perfect for a nightcap, this dark and moody space has a cocktail menu that's well worth the hype, and a railroad-themed Art Deco interior to match. Master mixologists create these drinkable works of art which are sorted on their drink menu by classics, modern, seasonal and fancy, and prepare them in front of you donned in official 'mixologist' coats. Though this is the ultimate cocktail spot, Employees Only has a full dinner menu as well, and it's pretty solid.
UES.
1707 2nd Ave (East 88th Street), New York, NY 10128
Though UES. looks like your average ice cream shop, look closely and you'll find there's more than meets the eye. The door, you'll see, is actually lined with empty ice cream carts, and behind its walls lies something unexpected: an upscale cocktail lounge (aptly named The Storage Room). This cool (very impressive) date spot is complete with chandeliers and a glowing bar; presentation is everything here. One drink, 'Here's Looking At You Bradshaw,' is delivered to you with a condom and cigarette by its side. You know, for suggestion only...
Patent Pending
49 W 27th St (btwn Broadway & 6th Ave), New York, NY 10001
Patent Pending
At 5pm each day, Patent Pending transforms from a day time coffee shop into a chic bar. The intimate booths are sexy and create a romantic setting, ideal for a spontaneous date night midweek. Are the drinks a little overpriced? Yes, but on vibes alone, they're totally worth it (also, they're good). Our fave is 'Radio Waves:' a tequila, mezcal agricole rhum, basil, Thai chile, lime, and cucumber masterpiece.
The Garret West
296 Bleecker St (above Five Guys), New York, NY 10014
The Garret West
296 Bleecker St (above Five Guys), New York, NY 10014
The Garret West is a speakeasy cocktail bar serving innovative seasonal cocktails in a rather unconventional location. Enter via Five Guys--a brightly-lit, fast food burger joint, and head up the stairs in the back. Your eyes will need a moment to re-adjust to the dimly-lit, copper ceiling, cozy, but hip interior, but once they do, you'll realize you're in a charming bar in the heart of the West Village. And like Russian Dolls, tucked away in the back of this speakeasy lies... another speakeasy(!). This one is a restaurant with dishes like scallops, octopus poke and braised short ribs. But, like, you can also totally just grab a burger downstairs...
Garfunkel's
67 Clinton St, New York, NY 10002
We love a bar with a kitschy theme inspired by a true story. Garfunkel's is just that. This speakeasy got its name from the infamous bankers-turned-fugitives duo, Garfunkel and Tauster, who actually operated their illegal ring in this very location. The vault door entry pays proper homage to its criminal roots and will make you feel like you're in a live game of Clue. This spot is also a nice respite from the typical LES crowd (read: college students looking to rage). The vibe here is more chill, upscale, and older which makes it the perfect place to relax and indulge in a seriously good craft cocktail (or three).
Peachy's
5 Doyers St, New York, NY 10013
Peachy's
If you get into this secret hot spot, savor your drinks slowly. A hot destination for celebs—including the Kardashians, Vanessa Hudgens, and Post Malone, the subdued glow of the pink lights and cascade of hanging cherry blossoms at Peachy’s will hook you in before you even sit down. Also, to save you some embarrassment, yes the Gucci tiger print wallpaper is totally Instagrammable, an no, you cannot take pics here. It's that... cool.
Sweet Polly
71 6th Ave (Flatbush Ave), Brooklyn, NY 11217
Sweet Polly
71 6th Ave (Flatbush Ave), Brooklyn, NY 11217
Swing by Sweet Polly for an eclectic crowd and an intimate vibe. If you're of the extrovert-variety, lucky youd; someone interesting is sure to chat you up here. We'd be remiss to not mention/recommend the Fifty Shades cocktail (this is a date, after all) with gin, cappelletti, Vouvray, white verjus, fresh grapes, lemon, and tonic.
Banzarbar
191 Chrystie St Apt 2F, New York, NY 10002
For all the businesses located in Freeman's Alley, there's already a sort of 'If you know, you know' attitude. Banzarbar, which is hidden within a restaurant (Freemans) within that alley, takes that mentality to a new level. Located on Freemans second floor exists a tiny little bar which, if you're not looking for, you will totally miss. It's small and intimate (the only seats are at the bar), and its clandestine nature plays into the appeal. It's a perfect date spot to impress you S.O. with all your fave lesser-known nooks and crannies of the city.
