How to Get That "Back to School" Feeling For Date Night

September marks the official beginning of fall and also brings back another strong vibe: that back to school feeling. If you’re missing that feeling of excitement, newness, and learning, but don’t want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and 4+ years on grad school, we’ve got you covered! Here’s ten playful dates to give you and your lover that back to school feeling.

01

Cafeteria

119 7th Avenue, Manhattan

01

Maybe this seems a little on the nose, but who doesn’t miss the bustle of lunchtime, seeing all the different social dynamics, and eating some of the most comforting food in the world? Cafeteria brings you all that fun, adapted for adults and with high quality. This chic diner is open all hours of the night, bringing in a diverse crowd of people from regulars to party-goers. Their fare comes in giant portions with favorites being meatloaf and chicken and waffles. Grab a seat inside or outside to catch some rays and talk all about the drama going on at the next table.

02

Magic Hour

485 7th Avenue 18th Floor, Manhattan

Magic Hour

This rooftop bar lives up to its name by bringing you fun, whimsy, and above all, magic. Situated atop the Moxy Times Square, it offers a great view of midtown but has sights within thanks to its amusement park themed decor-think swirling, carnivalesque doors, funky lighting, and a suggestive mini-golf course. The menu plays into the theme, with drinks like Cotton Candy and Magic Mule that come in a pouch and with a straw, like an alcoholic Capri-Sun. And nothing is more magically or romantic than the words “alcoholic Capri-Sun.”

03

The Uncommons

230 Thompson Street, Manhattan

The Uncommons

230 Thompson Street, Manhattan

If you can never sync up schedules with another couple for game night, have your own game night (or day) with just the two of you at The Uncommons. This popular board game cafe has stacks on stacks of board and card games for you to get overly competitive over. They also serve up delicious snacks like cheesy arepas and have a fun selection of beers. Just be sure to reserve a table ahead of time, as it’s pretty common for The Uncommons to get crowded.

04

Luna Park

1000 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn

04

Don’t sleep on Coney Island once Labor Day Weekend ends, as this amusement park is open well into October. With plenty of rides from the slower B&B Carousel (where you can still hold hands) to the more intense wooden roller coasters (where your hands are clasped in fear, not for romance), you’re guaranteed to get some childhood adrenaline. If you’re feeling sweet, you can try to win your partner a prize at a carnival game, or go the even sweeter route and chow down on caramel apples and funnel cake.

05

Slate

54 W 21st Street, Manhattan

Slate

For an upscale vibe that still has that playful fun, head to Slate NY. This multi-level club is dedicated to bringing you every form of adult fun possible. There are craft cocktails to assist you onto the DJ-run dance floor, and gourmet pizza and burgers on the menu to keep you going. One floor has a slide, which will take you to a room of arcade games, giant chess, and tons of tables for ping pong, Connect 4, and more. It’s basically the chic cousin of Dave & Busters, so you can have childlike fun with your partner without actual children there.

06

Shipwrecked

621 Court Street, Brooklyn

Shipwrecked

621 Court Street, Brooklyn

We know mini golf is the most fun when you really get into it, and Shipwrecked starts off the vibe by going 100% into their corny yet hilarious theme. Set in a world of pirates and treasure, this theatrical course has lights, sounds, and animatronics to keep you giggling through 18 holes. They also have mini escape rooms if you want to work those puzzle muscles, but if all the putting tires you out, lead your date to the Tiki Terrace. There on the roof you can enjoy the view of Brooklyn, small bites like mozzarella sticks and sliders, as well as beer and wine.

07

Alice's Tea Cup

156 E 64th Street, Manhattan

07

Memories of school bring most of us back to all the books we read, and one of the great classics is celebrated at Alice’s Tea Cup. This whimsical tea parlor leans into the vibe with strings of colorful pom poms and fairy lights, delicate flowery tea cups, and decadent cakes. You and your partner can treat yourself for good grades in communication and empathy with a selection of teas, finger sandwiches, and piles and piles of scones.

08

Free Kayaking

Hudson River Greenway, Manhattan

Free Kayaking

If not worrying about money is what really brings you back to that school kid mindset, then this free activity is perfect for a date. Running through mid-October, an organization called Downtown Boathouse loans out kayaks in both single- and double-seaters (depending on how much you want to splash at each other) so you can paddle away in the Hudson River. Hot tip: they have locker rentals that are free as long as you bring your own lock.

09

Pinot's Palette

382 5th Avenue, Brooklyn

Pinot's Palette

382 5th Avenue, Brooklyn

Experience an art class that can bring you back to the fun of learning something new and unlocking your creativity - with the addition of alcohol to make it a lot more fun than it was in high school. Pinot’s Palette is a Brooklyn-based wine and paint chain that has become popular because of its relaxed and fun attitude. You and your partner will get to experiment on canvas in a light and airy art shop, with your muse being the wine, beer, or cocktail of your choice (and, of course, each other). Grab a Dirty Paint Water (a cocktail offered, not an actual cup of dirty water) and Picasso away.

10

Dreamland Roller Rink

233 37th Street, Brooklyn

10

Remember all those roller skating birthday parties? Bring back that nostalgia and take your bae to Dreamland Roller Rink. This colorful indoor rink has an incredibly friendly staff and is a fun place to skate during the day. On Friday nights, it turns into an all-out disco with bumping tunes, crazy performances, and a crowd dressed to be seen.
