Our Favorite (Fictional) NYC Couples Of All Time

Love! Sure, we love to be in it, but you know what? We love to read about it or watch it on the big (and small!) screen (almost) just as much. Love in art is an ideal to aspire to — or, of course, to stay far away from — but here, we’re going to keep it to our faves, those fictional couples we just can’t help but fall in love with, again and again. They’ve got chemistry that’s off the charts, dates that make our hearts race, and the best home city in the whole wide world: New York City. So grab your popcorn and scroll to see our favorite fictional NYC couples of all time.

01

Carrie and Mr. Big, Sex and the City

01

Because, duh. Yes, he wasn’t the best when he first met our favorite columnist, but he sure turned into Prince Charming by the time he got to Paris. (And also, yes to a man who builds you a walk-in closet.)

02

Holly and Paul, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Holly and Paul, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Yes, much different than their relationship in the book, but their daytime masquerade through the city? Not to mention that rain-soaked scene at the end? Even ice empress Blair Waldorf couldn’t resist. Speaking of which…

03

Blair and Chuck, Gossip Girl

Blair and Chuck, Gossip Girl

He almost lost her to an actual prince! But we could never give up on these two beautiful demons and their Empire Hotel. Love — and lust — at its most decadent.

04

Kathleen and Joe, You’ve Got Mail

04

Unlike AOL’s signature tagline, Nora Ephron’s romantic classic — about the owner of an adorable local bookstore and the man behind the big box shop that puts her out of business (a battle of the bookstores! What a time to be alive!) — will never go out of style. Also, the pairing of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, sigh.

05

Rachel and Ross, Friends

Rachel and Ross, Friends

The definition of opposites attract, our favorite Friends and lovers.

06

Tom and Sam, Smash

Tom and Sam, Smash

We had to shoutout one of television's most under-appreciated shows — and couples! Sam ultimately leaves for a national tour of Book of Mormon (tear!), but before that, these two make the sweetest of sweet music together — just listen to this. (Also a chance to glory in Leslie Odom Jr.'s angelic voice pre-Hamilton! Truly, y'all were missing out.)

07

Olivia and Elliot, Law & Order: SVU

07

True, not a romantic couple. But one of our most beloved NYC pairings all the same! Get you a man who’s happy to stand behind you while you hold the gun. (You know what we mean.)

08

Fran and Bud, The Apartment

Fran and Bud, The Apartment

For a thousands reasons, but most of all for Shirley Maclaine’s BEST (and Oscar-nominated) response to “I love you”: “Shut up and deal.”

09

Miss Piggy and Kermit, Muppets Take Manhattan

Miss Piggy and Kermit, Muppets Take Manhattan

They may be L.A. kids at heart, but when our favorite muppets and their incredibly mismatched (but still perfect!) relationship took Manhattan, they officially became one of us.

10

Ally and Tyler, Remember Me

10

Quite possibly one of the most heart-wrenching movies of all time, but their love story makes it worth the pain.

11

Susan and Josh, Big

Susan and Josh, Big

Twofer for Tom Hanks! Yes, the actual age gap is a little creepy, but it's still so fun to watch these two, running around and living it up like the kid Josh actually was. (Don't grow up — it's a trap!)

12

Marisa and Christopher, Maid in Manhattan

Marisa and Christopher, Maid in Manhattan

Ah, J.Lo at her finest! Is there anything more romantic than a senatorial candidate falling for his maid… who he actually mistakes for a rich socialite? Er, probably. (Stay woke, 2017.) Still, when she shows up to The Met in that dress? The look on his face? Still not over it.

13

Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, Jessica Jones

13

We're going to have to wait and see how it shakes out for these superhuman anti-heroes. But the wall-smashing, bed-breaking passion between these two? Ay! Still keeps us up at night.

14

Sara and Hitch, Hitch

Sara and Hitch, Hitch

Their incredibly varied dates (Ellis Island, jet-skiing, a cooking class, come on!) are exactly what idk aims for when thinking about how to spice it up with the ones we dig most. But also: those dancing skills! Worth a repeat viewing alone.

15

Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker, Spider-Man

Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker, Spider-Man

Two words: that kiss.

16

Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen, Will & Grace

16

And lastly, a double couple — our favorite NYC quartet! Yes, none of them are lovers, but they're still some of our favorite people in this roundup. They were trailblazers for the way they portrayed gay relationships on TV — and they had some of the most insane chemistry on this list. Goals, #AllTheGoals.
